Can I change to daily smart meter readings?

I recently switched from OVO to a fixed unit price deal with Fuse Energy (thanks to MSE Cheap Energy Club). My choice with OVO was monthly readings and Fuse are taking half hourly readings. I contacted them to ask to change to just daily readings and they have replied to say the can't do it. As the unit rate doesn't vary at different times of day I don't see the need for half hourly readings. I thought I had a right to request just daily readings to be taken.

What is your issue with them taking readings every half hour? This is how smatrt meters operate.

A smart electric meter stores a lot of data in its own data store, This includes a record of the quantity of electricity passing through it every half hour and the reading of each register (e.g. peak and offpeak) every day at midnight GMT. The data are stored for various periods; half-hourly for 400 days. Suppliers will usually poll your meter once a day for each of these datasets unless you opt for a different frequency, but the data are stored and retrievable at any time by anyone with authority to do so. Your option only affects what the supplier retrieves and makes available to you on its website - it doesn't affect the functioning of the meter in any way.

Agreed, it's there in section 14 of the T&C:

You agree that we may use your electricity consumption data relating to half-hourly periods for settlement purposes and as further.

If you don't want half-hourly metering, you'll need to switch suppliers.

Just go onto the Fuse app and it will give you daily readings (or monthly or hourly or for current year) either KWh or £.

The rules on half hourly access were changed a few years ago by Ofgem - and it's likely that the OP did not realise by swapping suppliers - or meters etc iirc - the old DAPF default protection had been changed.

And certainly at one point - for domestic (not for micro businesses) although the rules were changed - from dafault daily and opt in to half hourly or opt of daily to monthly - to default half hourly but with provision for opt out of half hourly back to daily - which is possibly what the OP has asked Fuse for (or maybe just doesnt want to add 48 numbers a day) - and they have refused.

Settlement in Fuse T&CS is vague - as many of us more recently had to give (or again potentially opt out) of giving suppliers access for half hourly settlement (wholesale market settlement - not domestic supply billing use).

However the rules have been changing - there have been more Ofgem / industry consultations ongoing in 2025 and 2026 - that might have changed the rules again.

End of the day, no matter how often they take a reading. You will still only get a monthly bill, for the amount of energy you have used.

which if true why remove the options under DAPF to only give - for not all reasons but specificalky including potential billing purposes - daily by default and opt out to monthly resolution data as selected by OP before - to suppliers.

The T&Cs line above refers to settlement.

DAPF specifically ring fenced billing - to protect against dynamic surge / plunge pricing - and unless Ofgem have changed it again - we still have a right under licensing to opt out of 1/2 hourly to daily only access for that purpose.

Of course the OP might not have read that T&C condition - but id certainly expect it to refer to for HHS purposes - as written.

Even more so in light of the recent exercise at many - when suppliers had to seek user permission to access for settlement. A second and seperate permission - my supplier had to seek and at time after changing - certainly held seperately for my data use by purpose - as required at time if not now.

And somewhat ironically Im actually on smart meter, with a TOU tariff - E10 - so not so far from likes of Cosy modern TOU style. But its like many older TOU like say E7 etc register based, and as such EOn stop me from seeing the data in it's app - as not billed by 1/2 hr - it's not deemed by them useful I guess.

And strictly - due to meter randomised alcs / tariff timing offsets in many such meters for those tariffs - the style of tariff cannot be billed as sold on xx:00 and xx:30 UTC boundary data (well not without zeroing those offsets - and risking grid spikes / dips as millions switch very large - say 10kW plus loads on at fixed times).

You only get "48 hours a day" by rummaging around deep in the app. By default it shows you the month and the day,
