Hopefully the OP realises the policy limit is per person not the entire holiday… a common misunderstanding.

Yes, some employers are generous and will go well beyond what they are required to do whereas others you struggle to get them to do the statutory minimum… for example when I did some work with an insurer that writes some private medical insurance there was a surprising number of instructions from the employer that a claim should be paid, despite not being covered or above the limit etc, and that the employer would repay the extra costs. Now a fair few were for C suite type people but there was a good percentage that seemed to be for a rank and file/junior manager type person.

Here we can only really comment on your what you're entitled to rather than what goodwill you may get; though we can say to ask.

Goodwill may also be dependent on how things happened… could be hush money, genuine goodwill and it may be withheld if you did something truly stupid or the accident has cost them a lot of money too.

Would the cause of the husband's injury not have a bearing on any employer's liability ?

Hopefully the latter are at fault.

Thank you all for you're comments. Glad that I posted here to gain some insight as I am only working with what I've been told by medical professionals and what I've researched on google during a very stressful time. As I said, I do have travel insurance that I can claim on. In response to someones comments, I do realise the amount I can claim is per-person, although initially I didn't!! Thank you to those who sent well wishes to my husband, he has been left blind in one eye, but otherwise is recovering well. No employer liability to claim as he is self employed.
