Tokyo hotel....

We are planning a trip to Japan in October. First stop will be 4 nights in Tokyo…..

It's a big city so can anyone suggest the best area to stay plus any hotel suggestions. Doesn't have to be the height of luxury but I should think a good 3 star or 4 star.

Thank you

The question would probably be better asked on TripAdvisor or similar sites.

When I went to Tokyo I stayed in the Shinjuku area. That area was chosen as there were several sights I wanted to visit that I could walk to, it was near Shinjuku station for easy rail/subway access to everywhere else in Tokyo, and the Narita Express train from the airport stops at Shinjuku meaning less train transfers with luggage on arrival.

As long as you are within easy distance of a railway/subway station then you won't be particularly limited by any area.

As for choosing a hotel, look at something like Booking.com to see what there is in the areas you are thinking of staying in. There will be lots of options and the aggregators are useful for seeing them even if you end up booking direct with the hotel. I ended up booking pretty much all my accommodation in Japan via Booking.com as not all accommodation choices had their own websites and if they did they weren't all really set up for English language use so Booking.com was just easier.

My main adivce is to know standard Tokyo hotel rooms are TINY, think double bed against two sides of a wall and space to walk or open a suitcase but not both together. The mainstream low-mid range is mostly a couple of chains which are everywhere and very small. We went for luxury in the form of more space rather than opulence, but had to search out room sizes.

The metro stations are everywhere so we found the area really didn't matter, but if you do care then I'd plot out where you're planning to visit and pick an area where you're spending the most time.

Kichijoji is nice, but not cheap. You can get the train from there to lots of interesting places too.
