It is never too early to start planning for retirement.
He should put it in a SIPP, and invest in a global tracker.0 -
But you should also plan for more near-time events, like buying a house, and don't lock up so much for 40+ years that you can't afford to live comfortably in the meantime.
Also don't put money in a SIPP if you're not paying tax on at least that amount of earnings - if he's going to be a high earner the time to stuff the pension is when that gets higher rate tax relief.
