BEST iPHONE APP TO ACCEPT PAYMENTS @ CAR BOOT SALE/ MARKET STALL?

Hello All,

Can Anyone advise which would be THE BEST APP (for iPhone) to be able to accept payments for my old clothes & shoes that I sell at a car boot sale ?

  • With less charges

and

  • also would like to find out if there's one option with * some kind of protection* where a buyer cannot just reverse through their banks a charge for an item they have bought from me? Since I'm not seeing them again after they take their physical purchase with them.

*FYI These are only sporadic car boot sales I do, but on my first one last Sunday 26/04/26 I lost out on selling 5/6 items because I did not have the facility to accept digital payments.*

Many, many thanks in advance!

Well now you are into conflicting proprieties space… how are you balancing your desire for low fees against your desire for chargeback protection?

Are you agnostic to other factors like how long it takes them to pass on your monies?

Personally have always used Zettle, now called PayPal PoS… dont sell enough that the difference in fees would make much difference. The card reader is optional on an iPhone these days as you can just use the phones own near field capabilities but if someone has tapped too many times you obviously can't insert card to do a chip and pin transaction without a card reader.

From memory they will cover up to £250 of chargebacks a month as long as you have followed all their guidelines and respond promptly. Worth checking what those are in detail as they may be onerous for a carbon sale.

    Thanks for your reply.

"Are you agnostic to other factors like how long it takes them to pass on your monies?"

    Pardon my ignorance…

    • Do you mean the amount of time it takes the app co. to credit your account is not legally regulated as being the same for all of them? Is it different for different app cos.?
    • What is "a carbon sale"? 🤔

I doubt you will find anyone who indemnifies you completely against scamsters. What you can do is ask them to have their photo taken with the purchased item, and if the value is high, also ask them to let you take a photo of their ID. This might put off some punters, as they might not trust you with their personal information. That's where cash comes in as the King………….

I don't have personal experience of any of the available apps, but there are many - e.g. https://squareup.com/gb/en/point-of-sale or SumUp or Zettle. All do have a jungle of T&Cs so you need to be very determined and have a lot of use.

Another option might be bank transfer. Not as safe as cash, but anyone with an app should be able to send you money at a car boot sale. One or two banks also let you text payment requests - AFAIK, Revolut, Starling and Natwest can do this. This are instant, as should the payments be.

Then buy the machines to check the notes for fakes, the security for cash payments being taken off site and dealing with bank security teams. Or just accept bank transfer!

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Good point, I had not fully thought through the potential pitfalls of taking cash payments
