Installing a electric charging port at home

For £4 I charged my car from 36% to 66% which should have been 15 kWh. I was the only car at a bank of Tesla superchargers at about 07:35 and it seems I only paid 29p per kWh. Tesla charge different rates according to time of use; I hadn't realised I paid so little until I looked back today. It was enough charge to get me to my destination and back, so was definitely worth it.

decent rate then! Never used a Tesla charger but if it can only cost that then I ought to investigate. I know they do non-Tesla vehicles now too. Interesting.

Do you have that automated?

I don't have a charger or EV yet, planning on getting them in the next couple of months. Will use home assistant to automate it, but also depends on how Iran goes as I'm currently on a fix so will need to weigh up the risks of leaving that.

Check before you turn up if a specific Tesla charger accepts any vehicle. Some do; some don't.
If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.1 -
Fortunately for me, the one I used accepts any vehicle - which is probably for the best for Tesla as I never see it heavily used when I drive past.

Most Tesla Superchargers have two rates, some have three, these vary by the time of day one starts the charge. If they allow non-Tesla vehicles to charge then they also charge those vehicles a higher rate. I have noted it before when I have gone on a long journey, I am charging on a Tesla Supercharger at say 28p per kWh, the other chargers at the same services are all in the 80-90p per kWh range.

That wasn't true for me. I don't drive a Tesla and I got a rate of 29p per kWh starting (and finishing) my charge before 8 AM. I used the Tesla app and I don't think that even knows what make of car I drive. The app will tell you in advance what price you will pay to charge. Possibly aTesla owner could have somehow got an even lower rate but 29p per kWh aint bad.

So as an example this is one I have used before, the pricing always varies by ToU, but it also varies depending on vehicle type, if one has a Tesla then the pricing is even cheaper. At some of the motorway Superchargers the 22:00-23:00 is 20p per kWh for Tesla owners.

Oxford services on the M40 for example is only 20p per kWh between 22-00 and 08:00, but is a Tesla only Supercharger.
