I disagree with the RICS valuation after probate. What can I do?

Are you on good terms with him? Does he have children orf his own?
One possibility is that he agrees to make a deed of variation to change the terms of intestacy. For instance the house could be put into an immediate post death interest trust. This would give him the right to remain for life and would recieved it on his death or if he no longer needed the house.
Had your mother had made a will this is the sort of thing that would be included to protect both her spouse and child. It is also very tax efficient.

No, there was a huge family rift because of him and something terrible that he did. Hence my estrangement years ago. However, an old invalid will did state that she wanted the property to be passed to her grandchildren (my children) after his death and no doubt she would have wanted that despite our estrangement. But what she would have wanted doesn't matter now it's in intestate hands.
Me and you are definitely on the same page - I actually wrote a DOV for him to sign (highly unlikely!) with the exact clauses you said. He does have two middle aged children (not with the deceased), one of whom most definitely wouldn't want to lose the opportunity to very soon inherit a house of their dreams! I am the only child of the deceased.
