Big thank you to WiserMiser! So Energy have put me on MVDDs. It was relatively straightforward to get this sorted (at least, as straightforward as anything ever is with So Energy). I also got back well over £500 of credit that was being held by So Energy. They have said they are going to fix the inflated gas usage projections (now that it matters a lot less) but I haven't yet seen what the fix actually amounts to.

I went through So Energy's help pages to find references to MVDDs but couldn't find anything (admittedly I got very bored wading through pages and pages of FAQs, so might have missed something in this regard). I think it's pretty poor not making customers fully aware of the full range of options (particularly when customers are in touch with customer services about their accounts). I realise MVDDs are not for everyone and that many will prefer fixed direct debits (albeit that, in my experience at least, you don't actually get that with So Energy) but I can't help feeling that the lack of information is because So Energy simply prefers to hold large amounts of customers' cash. I for one would rather bank with my bank and not bank with So Energy, and I'm pretty sure the £500+ I have got back from So Energy will more than cover the extra I will need to pay each month in the winter months.
