RAC renewal

my 2 year cover with RAC was due to renew and I was quoted a £44/20% increase to £270. It's for 1 car that's 16 years old but very reliable so only 2 callouts in all that time.

I never let an auto-renewal happen without checking the market and haggling. Moneysupermarket showed me the best offer I could get for annual cover was £37 plus £40 callout excess. That's an unbelievable difference on price alone, but when I saw it was with RAC Essentials I was shocked.

When I rang to cancel the agent unbelievably said I was comparing oranges and apples. Clearly I'm not as it's the same orange RAC van that will turn up for 14% of the cost of their renewal.

You do realise there are different levels of cover hence the 'oranges and apples' comment. You may have had the 'top' cover that had £0 excess, home start, onward transport home etc.

Maybe know you don't. Check out the differences. That said £270 is expensive.

Even there, you may be comparing oranges and apples with your reference to 14%, if the more expensive policy is for two years and the cheaper one just one, but did the agent explain why they assert that the comparison isn't like for like, e.g. different service levels or terms?

Whats the benefit of staying with one particular breakdown company? The AA have an offer (ending 29 April) for about £120 for vehicle cover one year at home, national recovery and onward travel

It does say it is for new AA breakdown customers only who are UK residents, and not existing AA breakdown members or at renewal - so presumably so long as you're dont have an active contract with them for the previous year you'd be a new customer (even if you were previously a customer)?

Check Topcashback and Quidco for cashback deals on car breakdown cover.

Can you check with your bank?

We are with Nationwide and for £18 per month we have travel ins, phone cover and breakdown cover for 2 cars.

You may even get money for switching your account to them, but unsure if that's the case at the moment
