Do i need to declare this?

Currently in the middle of purchasing a new car, contacted my insurance company for a quote to remove my old car and add my new car. Got told that the insurance company had declined it, that they didn't give a reason and that they don't need to share the reason why. Frustatingly enough the cheapest insurer on comparison sites is the same insurer.

Few extra details:

It was on a multicar quote

On some websites including this insurers own, it cannot find the car reg in the databse.

Do i need to declare this when looking for alternative insurance quotes as some comparions sites say declined in the question but in the info section only specifically mention cancelled insurance policies

Thanks!

No you don't need to declare when an insurer declines to quote. Theoretically we have all likely been declined this way if using a comparison site - if you go to the last results there will often be 'no quote'

No, doesnt need to be declared… in principle you've asked them to quote for the new car you are going to buy, they've said they arent willing to insure it. That gives you two choices, pull out of the purchase and keep your old car or you cancel the policy, buy the car and insurer it elsewhere.

Cancellations you choose to make, even if your hand is somewhat forced, dont need to be declared nor do a declines to quote else anyone who's used an aggregator who's under 50 would have to declare that Saga declined to quote every year.

Are you buying from a direct insurer or a broker/intermediary? With the later you are locked into both the broker and the insurer so it can be the case that you buy your insurance from the AA, they placed you with ERS this year and ERS won't quote for this vehicle however Aviva, Axa and Allianz who are also on their panel will quote hence you get a decline to change but can get a new business quote.

A better agent would check and tell you that they can't do it under your current policy but could sell you a new 12 month policy for £X, ideally they'd offer to waive the cancellation fees (their own at least) but arent obligated to do so.

Definitely don't need to declare. Cancelled insurance is for things like committing fraud, declined is just that they don't want your business for whatever reason.

Like you, I find it frustrating that the call handlers have such limited information available that they can't answer your questions.
