Smart meter installation
Octopus have installed a smart gas meter but are refusing to install an electric smart meter because our existing meter is 7'6" off the ground and above a kitchen work top.
I find this unbelievable 😮
So we are unable to get a better tariff through no fault of our own. What would happen if the meter became faulty or just to old!

More a case that installer was not aware that they needed extra safety equipment to install a meter over 7' high. It's not like they could stand on your worktop to fit it.

Why don't you write a complete post? Surely they told you what the problem was. They didn't just shrug their shoulders. If it needs to be moved first, then it is a bigger job. Did they say it needs a specialist to move it first?
I'm FTB, not an expert, all my comments are from personal experience and not a professional advice.Mortgage debt start date = 11/2024 = 175k (5.19% interest rate, 20 year term)- Q4/2024 = 139.3k (5.19% -> 4.94%)
- **/2025 = 44k (4.94% -> 3.94%)
- Q1/2026 = PAID (3.94%)

Maybe they don't have anyone 7 foot 6 or above to read the meter? Generally they don't install meters over 2m or below .5m. I'm sure they could relocate the meter to a more sensible location.

How have they been reading your old meter?

… other than having your meter too high and with no way to get closer due to the worktop…
Do you own the property or is it a rental?
If you own it then the cost of moving the meter is all yours, if a rental then talk to the landlord…

There is possibly nothing wrong with that height wise - my parents meter and cu are above the height and the main cu itself above their main front door - id say easily tge same 7.5 feet.
I suspect its combination of depth at height from easy access.
As similarly in my ex's victorian era flat with 11ft plus ceilings - again just below ceiling height at entrance. The fitted came with a mate to help carry and hold safe insulated ladder - on second visit - rejected first - wouldnt use her metal steps alone - HSE.
In both cases good eyesight (very) or small steps / small ladder needed to read old meters.
but i suspect if used a ladder it could be at risk of toppling due to having to stretch over work units.
you or i might stand say 1 foot on kitchen top - for stable reach - they wouldnt be allowed to I suspect - not just in case damage (they might just make you sign a waiver as they sonetimes do if have to drill ) but more importantly I suspect HSE
As above it may have to be moved at owners cost
