Buildings Insurance but Dad's now in a care home
So my father is in a care home due to dementia and his home insurance has expired , his partner (not married) still lives in his home, she can't get building insurance because she doesn't own the home , he obviously doesn't live there and we don't have power of attorney and because of his mental state it will take at least a year to get it . Anyone know how we can insure his home for buildings , his partner can get contents insurance.

This one sounds like a nightmare, not sure what can be done but I assume there is something. Talking to the old insurer could an option, without the power of attorney they may just refuse to engage with you.
I'd recommend asking for guidance from one of the dementia charities, I would guess they have seen this before and may have some ideas.

You probably will need a Power of Attorney for your father but as you said that may be difficult now because of dementia, I would visit your father and call the existing or last insurance company on the phone and if your father is able to confirm his details and give you permission to speak for him. I managed to do this for my father with Sky who also had dementia but it will depend on the company you are dealing with. If they agree they can note your details including mobile and email

The OP would need to apply for deputyship, far too late for LPAs now. These are not obtained quickly and there are court cost to be paid.
As occupant his partner could obtain contents insurance, but buildings insurance is going to be tricky. As a first step I would contact the existing insurer and it might also be worth talking to a broker.

Have you confirmed that the insurance didn't auto-renew?

As suggested try talking to a charity - Age UK is often a good place to start - and talk to an insurance broker.
