Oh and the decision to take this property meant she had to give up her housing association flat which, in turn, means that she voluntarily came out of social housing (almshouses are deemed some sort of private rent) which means that she would find herself bottom of any list for social housing if she ever had to leave the almshouse

What is she meant to do after 7 years

Perhaps by then she'll have found a better-paying job.

Or perhaps by then she'll have moved to a cheaper part of the country.

Or perhaps by then she'll have met a nice boy/girl and have a new life with them.

That's all seven years away, and there are a lot of possible futures.

The fact remains that, with £80k in her pocket, she no longer needs social housing and her almshouse flat can be offered to someone else who doesn't have £80k.

And perhaps not, quite a big gamble to take. If she stays in the almshouse for longer than 7 years then she benefits more than taking the £80k. 7 years is not a long time to stay in the same job at all.

As a single parent currently working part time (the OP tells us), the potential is there for the tennant to be working full time hours in 7 years time. I suppose it’s possible that an increase in hours would be avoided to keep income under any necessary threshold to hang onto the property.

The OP has not mentioned whether or not the tenant is receiving any state assistance aside from the charitable support.

My daughter (a key worker) rents in SW London, sharing with a friend. Their rent is £1600 pcm on a two bed flat with no outside space.
