Tv sound disappears

I have a Samsung series 6 smart tv. I think it must be about 11 years old. Every now and then when streaming the sound just goes off. I can fix it by turning the tv off and disconnecting it at the mains, then when it is switched back on it all works fine for a little while. The problem doesn’t seem to affect terrestrial tv, but as I don’t watch a lot of terrestrial tv I can’t be sure.

Is there a more permanent fix? I can’t find one courtesy of Mr Google. Or is it just a sign that the tv is about to give up? The picture is fine. Or is it just a condemnation of my internet connection (it’s on wifi). Maybe a wifi booster ?

Is this through the TV speakers?

A WiFi issue would more likely affect the video before the audio so I'd possibly discount that. Are you streaming using the TVs built in apps or something like a Firestick? If using the internal apps, have you got a Firestick to see if it makes any difference?

If you can borrow one, perhaps try a soundbar?

Yes it’s the tv speakers and the tv’s own apps. I do have a fire stick so I will try it. It’s only been a problem for the last several months. Used to work fine.

everything works fine until it stops working.
Easiest fix would be to replace the 11yr old TV.

When it goes off does sound continue on other apps or if you switch to terrestrial?

Testing with the fire stick would be a good option.

I know there have been some problems with external devices dealing with apps that have adverts where the source is frequently switching from Dolby ATMOS for the content to Stereo for the adverts and it causing the HDMI handshake to have problems resulting in the sound being dropped. AppleTV have made a change to their OS to given an option to prevent it from happening but that shouldn't be a problem for built in capabilities because there is no handshake involved
