Are there alternatives to Direct Debit for monthly fees?

Direct Debit is still the default for a reason — it’s protected and predictable. The main advantage is the Direct Debit Guarantee, which means you can get an immediate refund if something goes wrong, and payments run automatically once set up.
Pay-by-Bank/Open Banking is growing, but it’s mostly used for one-off payments at the moment. For regular monthly charges, it’s less common because many setups still require you to approve each payment, so it’s not as “set and forget.”
From a consumer point of view, Direct Debit is usually more reliable for recurring bills. The newer options can be quicker and give more control, but they can also mean more manual steps and fewer built-in protections.

The other advantage of a DD over a "push" payment (e.g. standing order) is that the amount can vary from month to month. Something fixed - like a gym membership would work find with a SO, but a phone bill would be awkward - as you'd then have to go in and adjust the amount ever month.

I’ve noticed that some monthly payments (like gym memberships or subscriptions) are still taken by Direct Debit, but they don’t always go through smoothly and can lead to missed payments or extra hassle.
Since when have DD's been unreliable? And "still taken"? DD's are hardly an outdated process.
