Uswitch Electricity and Gas
OK colour me confused…
I'm currently on the E.On Next Fixed 16m v16 tariff for both electricity and gas which is due to expire at the end of July this year.
Current rates are 20.53p/kWh & 31.64p/day Electricity and 5.82p/kWh & 32.36p/day Gas.
I'm thinking of swapping to the 12m v119 tariff which has the following rates…
21.96p/kWh & 49.70p/day Electricity and 6.63p/kWH & 28.56p/day Gas.
Based on actual usage of 9,919 kWh Electric, and 6,396 kWh Gas, the current monthly estimate is £250 per month (£3,009.70 per annum) and for the new tariff £240 per month (£2,887.39 per annum).
Given the above rates, considering the new rates are all a lot higher than the current rates (apart from the gas standing charge) how can the new tariff be cheaper?

Have you actually done the maths yourself rather than relying on a figure given to you?

Or, I can just do it for you
Current tarriff:
Electric usage 9919 units @ 20.53p = £2036.37
Gas usage 6396 units @ 5.82p = £372.25
Electric standing charge 365 days @ 31.64p = £115.49
Gas standing charge 365 days @ 32.36p = £118.11
Total = £2642.22, divided by 12 = £220.18
New tarriff:
Electric usage 9919 units @ 21.96p = £2178.21
Gas usage 6396 units @ 6.63p = £424.05
Electric standing charge 365 days @ 49.7p = £181.41
Gas standing charge 365 days @ 28.56p = £104.24
Total = £2887.92, divided by 12 = £240.66
Basically you (or the website) did the maths wrong on your current tarriff.

I suspect they are just using the current SVT for the period after the fix ends…

I wont even get started on the energy usage, I live in an electric only house and we dont even use 6k units a year! Are you powering a street?

The people we bought our house from were using almost 16,000kWh of electric a year! (electric car, hot tub, sauna and immersion heaters on 24/7)
We have only been in the house a month but I reckon we will have it down to about 7,500kWh a year which includes the hot tub.

Yeah I agree, we are high electricity users, there are three adults here. We work from home so the house is occupied 24 hrs a day, there are at least three computers in use all day.
