Late pick ups tend to come at an extra cost though rental desks at busier airports tend to stay open later.

I find meet and greets don't always charge for late pick ups.

Drop boxes for keys tend to be used for very late/very early drop offs.

A few years ago I had a flight change out of Rhodes. It was a local flight to another island and it went from noon to far too stupid an hour in the morning, the airport was closed and just about to open when we got there.

The hire company was just off site on a side street with a car park and drop box. It was dark (and far too early for a holiday) and I didn't clock the signs. Turns out there's more than one hire business on this side street operating the same way and, well yes, I dropped the car and keys at the wrong place!

They'd obviously retrieved the car and keys later in the day without any help from me but they did send me an amusing message, a sort of Greek Spec Savers advert!

I did use the company again later in the same year and we had a laugh about it.

Just spoken to Reduce My Excess and they said that as of last Feb, Green Motion has been readmitted. I guess they must have stopped with all the shenanigans, then.

Quick update. Yesterday I returned my car after a month's hire and had zero hassle.
When I returned it the guy did have a look, but he didn't take out an electronic microscope, but had a quick look round that lasted a couple of minutes and I was good to go. The money that was put aside on my credit card has been released.

The only issue is that they don't tell you (or at least didn't tell me) that at Edinburgh Airport you have to return the car when you first collected it, which is about a mile from the airport, and NOT at the car hire return area. Thankfully I was in no rush, but I can imagine how one could get stressed out.
