Will putting a new SIM in phone affect my storage

A friend has been having trouble with his phone and doesn't really know whether it's his provider (iMobile) or the phone.

A chap from Carphone Warehouse suggested he try his SIM in a friend's phone (me)

I'm not that clued up with regards IT, so just want to check, removing my SIM from my phone, adding his temporarily then changing back again won't affect anything .. or will I lose contact numbers etc.

thank you

Nope it won't change anything, totally safe.

Numbers can be stored on the phone, on the SIM (not so common nowadays), or on the cloud. Even if your numbers were stored on your SIM, putting your SIM back in would restore them. No other data is generally stored on a SIM (it has tiny memory capacity).

    What sort of "trouble"?

Does the phone connect to Wifi, if that is a capability it has?

I have had a damaged SIM in the past. Very uncommon but also worth considering.

As above though, you'll be fine to swap the SIM to your phone then afterwars put yours back in.

He uses his phone only for wifi in the house (no other internet provider) sometimes linking his phone to a laptop i think it's called via hotspot

When he watches YouTube on the laptop or phone it keeps cutting off after a while, sometimes just for a few seconds, but sometimes longer

Carphone Warehouse don't seem to be much help and said they could fix it (maybe) but there would be a charge, although his phone is only about a year old. They didn't know whether it was the phone or the SIM and suggested using the SIM in another phone, which is how i got involved.

He bought the phone from CW and the network is their own iDmobile.

My friend is actually away until tomorrow, so I'll try and help then

Just youtube that has an issue or other sites?

Certainly once you've swapped the SIM into your phone that should help limit the areas causing the problem.

Likely this is the problem. The point is that Youtube needs quite a lot of data, and the mobile SIM may not be providing it fast enough. When the film starts, there's a pause whilst a buffer fills with data. Then the film starts to play, and everything is fine as long as the buffer gets filled with new data as fast as it is being used up. If the connection is slow, teh buffer empties, and the film pauses whilst the buffer refills.

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

If he is using his mobile phone as his only source of an Internet connection to run YouTube on a laptop then unless he has a fast and rock solid 5 bar signal then he will suffer from drop outs and buffering.

Indeed. It's quite likely that everything is working exactly as it should. Not everywhere has a perfect mobile signal, and in any case the cell tower may be getting congested.

I'd suggest the OP's friend selects the lowest resolution youtube playback, which uses the least data, and sees whether that resolves the problem with the film pausing. If it does, then the next question is whether the low res video is satisfactory. If not, a better internet connection, such as fibre broadband, may be needed.
