I'm not sure I understand fully but why not just get a new will drawn up?

Why is it "down the pan"? It can be retrieved, I expect another firm will take over the wills bank of the old one.

Was the Will valid? If so, that remains so and the Will is just being stored somewhere else as the original Solicitor firm is out of action.

Do you still have a copy of the Will? If so, writing a new and valid Will would be quick and easy.

Why is it down the pan? You know where your will is, it's with the SRA. Does this help?.......

Our intervention agent tries to contact all clients who have ongoing, current cases that were being handled by an intervened firm to tell them we have closed down the firm. Our Intervention Archives Department contacts clients if we find a will, unregistered deeds or other document of record, such as a power of attorney, that is theirs. The intervention agent asks the client for instructions about what should happen to their file or document.

We keep safe the documents and money taken from an intervened firm until we are able to return them to the people they belong to. We may not be able to return papers and money straight away if

the firm's accounts have not been kept properly,

money or papers have gone missing,

we cannot contact the people they belong to.

Speak with the SRA, explain you were a client and ask what they are doing with your will?

We've recently gone through the same thing with my father-in-law's will, except he had already passed away. The solicitor who originally wrote it went bust, the will was passed to another solicitor who also went bust, the next solicitor in the chain was closed down by the solicitors regulation authority.

They have a form you need to fill in and send them…

SRA | Claim your papers from us | Solicitors Regulation Authority

They said it could take up to 12 weeks to find it but we got it within 4 weeks.

    Good luck.

The will is not "down the pan". The original will be retrievable from whichever firm takes over their work - or the SRA archive as @Gonk1967 has said.

The SRA archive search can be slow - but if someone has died and it's need for probate they will find it more quickly.
