Seem like a sad reality we have to get used to.

I quickly realised that I could end up with a bigger bill from the landlord if my action left the property in a different state to that at the start of my tenancy.
In that situation, I'd have asked the landlord for permission. They're not guaranteed to grant it, but it would be worth asking.

Haven't had one of these queries for a while now, but doesn't that old wrinkle still apply, that if when you move in you do not consume any gas, you are not in a deemed contract, and can inform the existing supplier that you have not used any gas and have no means to use any gas and do not wish to enter into a gas contract so the standing charge cannot apply?

We are in an era of "not increasing tax" promised by successive governments in their manifestos. It is government policy that has increased the standing charges shifting the increased national infrastructure costs from general taxation to standing charges thus increasing tax without increasing tax.

i guess it’s a creative way of increasing tax , and it feels like that too
