New telephones

Hi, I am new on here and would really appreciate some advice. I recently bought 3 cordless phones for my 88yr old mother as she is house bound and her current phones are not fit for purpose, however, when I took them to my mothers and tried to connect them they would not work so I phoned BT and they said they were not compatible with their lines and they couldn't help because they were not BT phones and I needed to contact Panasonic which is the make, we did this and were told it was BT's issue not theirs. I tried to return them to Argos and was told because I had opened them and tried to use them they would not refund me, I advised how can I check they work if I cannot open them and charge them up to see if they work, I was told I should have done my research as they cannot take them back as I had used them, surely this is wrong, please help.

  • First question is did you buy in store, click and collect or home delivery OP?

Aside from your issue of trying to get a refund from Argos, when it comes to sourcing replacement handsets, you'd need to get to the bottom of the incompatibility - is this an analogue versus digital issue perhaps? The process of converting traditional analogue lines to digital has been ongoing for years and has implications for handset choice…

  • I did click and collect. I have had a long conversation with Argos live chat and they just keep saying because I used them they cannot refund and advised I go into the store again and try again but I spoke to the manager when I first went and they advised I should do my research, rather rude I thought and it was my 88yr old mum who is housebound who asked me to order based on a recommendation. I am now £100 out of pocket as the phones are of no use to me.

    Is it this phone?

Interesting none mention anything about BT network, or any other.

One of the questions is. Will it work with Digital

This phone is DECT, so you will need an adapter provided by your service provider to use it on a digital system.

Does your mother have BT broadband?

A lot of the newer phones plug in to the router rather than the traditional BT socket.

If you bought them remotely and collected them in store, you should be able to return them.

The purpose for them and your mother's age has no bearing on your consumer rights.

That's not a problem if it was a distance contract and thereby eligible for cancellation for a full refund without having to specify a reason, under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 - opening and attempting to use doesn't negate those rights.

I have a set of 6 of those. They have no problems working on POTS and work quite happily on VOIP with an adapter

As I see it, there are two options here. If you paid online, collected them in store, tried them briefly and they didn't work with your mother's set-up, you may return them as eskbanker advises.

If you bought them in store (click in store, collect in store) then you don't have any automatic right to return them unless they're faulty or unless Argos' returns policy allows a change-of-mind return for open and used items (which I don't think it does). In this case, explore the adapter solutions suggested by others.
