Does NCD expiry clock start at insurance cancellation date or the date when I took out the policy?

Due to some circumstances I am possibly looking at cancelling my insurance policy early.
If I were to do this would my NCD expiry clock the start at when I cancel the policy or will it start from when I first took out this policy?

The expiry period (usually two years) starts from the date shown on your last renewal notice, i.e. your proof of NCD.

So would my last renewal notice be on the cancellation?

Depends how long you had the policy active and to some degree the actual insurer.

If you cancelled early in the policy they may not extend the date that you were insured with them
so the previous date may still apply.

I cancelled a policy and the cancellation letter had my NCD listed. Although it was 9+ years so not really nailed onto the cancellation date.

I was then on a company insurance for a period of 14 months, before taking out my own private policy again. The new policy accepted the original cancellation NCD proof. It was under 2 years which I think is the typical length of time they might accept it within.

It depends, if you cancelled your policy mid term most would want to see a NCD certificate from that insurer however if it was just a short term policy some will not issue a new certificate but return your prior one. Obviously to stop someone nearing two years from buying a policy, cancelling it after a week and getting another 2 years.

Increasingly insurers check via databases etc rather than asking for proof of NCD but there are certain brokers and bottom feeders that use checks as a useful additional revenue stream given they charge an admin fee on top of any additional premium when they discover your statement of truth wasnt 100% true.
