A company called Newday started a direct debit for £0, not sure why.

Hey everyone,

Like the title says; a company called Newday has started a direct debit for £0.on my father's Barclays account. He received a text message and email from Barlcays which I then confirmed by looking at the direct debit on the banking app.

The company seems to handle credit for businesses so I'm guessing it has something to do with that but I'm not sure if anything should be done or to just leave it alone.

In February and March I cancelled his 3 contract, insurance for a laptop as well as fully paying off his PayPal credit balance so I am wondering if it has something to do with one of these things.

Some advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Barclays can maybe block any payment to this company. I’ve heard of them though. He hasn’t signed up to anything?

Type Newday into a search engine and you will see they handle a range of company cards. John Lewis - Argos and Amazon are listed as some of their accounts. Altenative is go into your account and simply cancel it.

No he hasn't signed up for anything new and no car finance either.

He used to buy stuff using Argos credit but nothing on credit in the last 2 years. He did buy something for £150 from them in February but he bought it using his Barclays debit card.

I did think of simply cancelling the direct debit as it is £0 but I don't want it to cause an issue.

Would your Father have an existing direct debit set up on an Argos account?

An extract from recent correspondence I've received recently regarding Argos and NewDay

"We are writing to notify you that Home Retail Group Card Services Limited (the provider of the Argos Card) will assign all its respective legal rights, title and interest in respect of the above referenced Argos Card account to NewDay Ltd (“NewDay”, the provider of Argos Pay), effective 26th April 2026.

Your account will be transferred to NewDay in accordance with the contractual right to do so under clause 14.2 of your Argos Card Credit Agreement.

After 26th April 2026, all future communications, enquiries, and payments in relation to your account should be made to NewDay. One of the ways you can contact NewDay is by writing to:

    NewDay Ltd,
    Customer Service Department,
    P.O. Box 700,
    Leeds
    LS99 2BD

Under the terms of the assignment, and as defined in relevant data protection legislation (including the UK General Data Protection Regulation), NewDay will be the Controller of the Personal Data contained in the records of your account and will use your data in line with the NewDay privacy notice, which can be found at newday.co.uk/site-services/privacy-policy. Any questions about data protection should be directed to dpofficer@newday.co.uk."

Sounds like Argos credit. If he was my dad I'd keep a beady eye on his bank account.

    Thanks for all the replies.

Initially I was worried that this was some sort of scam or fraud but it is most likely Argos credit being switched over to a new company.

The question I have is, should I cancel the £0 direct debit or leave it there? My father will not be buying anything from Argos with credit anymore.

Cancel the direct debit and close the card is my suggestion, to remove any possibility of fraud in the future,
