I did try and yes it didn't help.

Thank you all so far the dongle works but of course with intermittent problems - hard to tell if it has fixed it or not.

My current wifi adapter (not being used at the moment of course) is Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 Wireless Network Adapter
I didn't try to reinstall drivers - I will leave it for the dongle now.
