it took less than two in weeks for my FIL's probate to come through. pretty simple eastate when all the forms were put together after months of gathering information. This was from end of March to 10th April and included the Easter holidays.

Currently requests are taking up to 20 weeks.

We just did the DIY probate through the gov website. £300… bargain (local solicitor wanted about £2,200). We submitted the online form on Friday, sent the will on Monday, "Grant of Probate" letter arrived Saturday morning.

I applied for letters of administration on 1st April for my mum's estate and received confirmation the probate was approved on 6th April. I'm still waiting for the letters of administration to arrive which I think is mostly down to the postal service - we received a bunch of letters (condolence cards) at the start of this week that were postmarked up to three weeks earlier.

If your doing DIY probate, It can take anything from days upwards. You can get an idea of the current timescales by searching common surnames on https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/ putting the current year in the
death/probate years box and fiddle with month.
That website can show as little as 3 weeks between date of death and probate, even with property.
The reason for variability in timescales is probably due to government data.

If applying on paper, your form is scanned and digitised. They don't even look at the will.
The grant is issued populated on the relevant fields of the PA1 etc form.
The government knows more about you than you do and probably uses a number of
systems to cross reference including HMRC. So no red flags in the data and no district probate registries allows it to be done in one day.

I helped my sister apply online for Letters of Administration at the beginning of July. We filled in the forms on a Thursday afternoon and received an email on the Sunday morning saying it had been granted. I assume they must be working overtime to get things through that quickly and on a Sunday.
