BT YouView Box - do I need to return it?

Hello,

I cancelled my elderly mother's BT Broadband. I checked her account and she currently does not pay for any TV services, however she has a BT YouView box which did come with the original package at the start of the contract.

When I cancelled the Broadband I asked what devices I need to return and he said the Router and Wifi extender disks. He didn't mention the BT YouView box.

Ideally I would like to keep the BT YouView box as without it the antenna signal drops and pixelates the picture. I dont want to buy one as trying to keep the costs down.

Does anyone know if I need to return the BT YouView box or do you think I would get away with keeping at no charge?

Any help appreciated

Thanks

Frank

If you go into the MyBT account and check the status of the order, in there at the end it will state if there is a charge for not returning the equipment.

BT You View box = old = unlikely they will demand return or charge £xx to the account. Back in the day these were supplied "foc" and kept once initial contract term completed, anyway.

Latest boxes are 'BT Pro' equivalent to latest Freeview Play specs and those were 'rented' in the agreement taken out; so returnable. Many seem to be sold to CeX and other places so BT either don't enforce or people just pay the 'fine' for non-return.

If TV signal is poor without the very low gain pass-through amplifier built into such a box then the aerial system needs attention/fettling. Re-making any hand made TV plug connections and trying alternative fly leads may help with that, but the PVR features of that box are surely useful anyway. ;)

NB Most stuff the ISPs require returning are for meeting the Govt. WEEE recycling legislation.

if it were supplied before 2019 it’s not likely to need returning, after that it will , but if you don’t receive any notification asking you to return it ( just the router and WiFi extenders) then you keep it or dispose of it yourself

Just in case…BT will send you a bag & postage paid label for the return of kit if you haven't already asked.
