EDF
Hi I swooped from Utilita last Oct 2025 to EDF reading was 398 at the time (active import reading). This was a brand new meter so accumulated this with Utilita over 6 months. This seems about the correct usage each month for a one person flat. EDF have not taken smart readings since so each month I have submitted them using the active import display. 1st April sent reading of 859 which EDF have disputed. They have said they now have a smart reading of 443 on the same day for a whole year. They have credited all my electric for the last 6 mths and billing for the 443 which means they are saying lve only used that amount in a year which is totally not adding up working out at 36.91 per month. Has anyone else had similar issues. I feel that they are either looking at the wrong reading or the smart meter is not giving the total reading to them.

Can you do a check or two please
- On the first bill you received what meter readings did it have ? Was this the meter reading you gave EDF when you moved to them ?
- What is the serial number on the meter ? What is the serial number on your bills ?
- Can you take a photo of the active import display reading ?
- How many bills do you have from EDF - is the meter reading / serial number consistent ?
PS Look for the letters A C E S or our read/your read on the bills alongside the meter reading

Hi the meters where installed new by landlord and had a total reading of 10 kwh when tenancy signed and was with Utilita. Stayed with them until Oct 2025 all readings as would be normal. Changed to EDF in Oct 25 with opening reading of 398.0000 which was given by me and also taken as a smart reading according to EDF. Then no readings were taken so each month I supplied the readings myself with no issues. Until April 2026 when they quarantined my reading of 859.0000 which is the Active Import reading on the meter. They then said the meter was submitting 455 on the 6th and 467 on 11th April and proceeded to refund the last six months of my readings and bills and recalculate the bill 11 Oct 2025 to 31 March 2026 using 398.0000 to 443.1590 total 45.1600 kwh @ £25.606p = £11.57. This totally does not make sense. I have suggested to EDF that the calculations do not add up to six months of electricity for a one bedroom flat. I got a response of
Hello
My Initial findings are that when the account transferred over to EDF Energy, the final reading provided to us were higher than what was on your actual meter. This means you may have paid the majority of this usage to the previous provider, so we wont charge you again for it. Although our readings may look low now. They will even out as we are now charging you based on the actual readings from your meter.
I have raised this with our smart team so they can re-check everything and make sure the readings the meter are sending us are the correct readings.
I will let you know their findings, as soon as I hear back from them.
Thanks very much
Kind regards
Joanne
I still do not agree that the readings they are taking for the whole usage of the life of the meter are correct. I have suggested an engineer looks at this but do not seem to be getting anywhere. Common sense suggests that there is something not right. The account is in credit but I feel that at some stage in the future this is going to bite me on the bum. If I change to another supplier, then the total meter reading will not be correct and this may cause issues. I am worried to EDF will eventually see sense and then want the money back (even though they have said they are not going to charge which in its self is strange). What do you think? Any advice on what to do next?
Thank you
PS Serial numbers etc all correspond with bills from Utilita and EDF

I would start by doing the checks Robin9 suggested and post the photo here.

Is the meter wholly within the flat, as opposed to an external meter cupboard or meter room?

The meter is in the flat.
This has been sent to EDF but they are insisting it's wrong.

Does the meter serial number on your bill match the number on the meter? 24P0420018, if I'm reading it right at the bottom-right of the meter on your photo?Sorry, I missed that you've already said the serial numbers match.
At the very least, set aside enough money somewhere so you can pay the catch-up bill when it ineviably arrives (when EDF twig, when you switch to another supplier or when you move out and close the account).

This has been sent to EDF but they are insisting it's wrong.
I'd suggest contacting them again and asking them what exactly they think is wrong. If they still say it is, tell them you believe they're under-billing you and make a formal complaint about that billing error. If they persist, ask for a deadlock letter and take it to the Ombudsman.

Have you a photo of today ?
Have you initiated a formal complaint as per EDF ?

We've occasionally seen discrepancies like this. One cause is the customer looking at one reading while the supplier is looking at another. It's possible that this meter is recording on separate peak and offpeak registers; the supplier is taking one of them (most probably R01, which should be for peak) while you've been taking the total of both registers, which would be the right figure assuming there's no price difference between peak and offpeak usage.
Pressing button 6 on the meter should cycle through several items, including R01 and R02 if they're present. Adding R01 and R02 together should give the Total Active Import figure, possibly shown after pressing button 9. Does this reveal anything?
[Sorry about all the mights and shoulds and probablies and possiblies. Meter manufacturers have a habit of changing configuration between models without telling anyone; suppliers can then add to the confusion by imposing their own modifications, so it's often a question of trial and error to find the menu item you're looking for.]
