Travel Insurance Dilemma

Hi, I really need some help.

We booked a holiday in January and should be flying out in May.

We purchased a years travel insurance in January, but to start the week before flying in May.

My partner had an emergency medial procedure this week and will be unable to fly.

Will we be covered for not going ?

Should I call the Travel Insurance company now or after the policy starts ?

In the grand scheme of things the cost of the holiday is not important compared to my partners health, but I am assuming if the Insurance Company would definitely not pay out, I could cancel the policy before it begins and at least recoup the hundreds of pounds that we paid for the insurance.

I would appreciate any help with this matter as worrying about my partner and this dilemma has got me puuling out what little hair I have left !

No, your annual travel insurance starting 1st May will not cover an event arising in April.

This should be covered by the annual insurance you have in place for this year, expiring 30th April.

The reason for the mantra "As Soon As You Book" for travel insurance is because events can, or even possibly more likely, to occur in the long period prior to the holiday than the short period of the actual holiday.

You do not have any insurance in place so you are not covered for cancellation.

With the unusual (and badly planned) situation of purchasing the insurance with a delayed start date then you'll have to dig into the Ts and Cs as to whether you are eligible for a refund of the premium.

If you purchased annual travel insurance it may well have started the day you took it out, despite having your travel dates included. You will need to speak to the insurer to check.

Travel insurance needs to be taken out as soon as possible after making a holiday booking…….not just before the date of travel.

If any of your party (God Forbid) has an accident or medical issue prior to travelling it may be covered by the T's&C's - if no insurance in place then obviously it won't be.

As above, you really need to talk with the cover provider without delay.
