Subject: Urgent: Sky Emails Blocked to Hotmail/Outlook - Need Advice!

Hi community,

I'm facing a persistent issue where I'm unable to receive emails from Sky to my Hotmail account. I understand that Hotmail is now part of the Outlook ecosystem, and while I get all other emails (from various senders) perfectly fine through Outlook, emails specifically from Sky are not arriving.

I've already:

  • Checked all junk, spam, and deleted folders thoroughly.
  • Confirmed that my Outlook/Hotmail account is correctly set up and functioning for all other incoming mail.
  • Verified that Sky is listed as a safe sender (or there's no specific block).

I suspect there might be an issue with Sky's email servers or how they are configured to send to Microsoft domains, or perhaps a specific filtering rule within Outlook that's inadvertently catching Sky emails.

Has anyone encountered a similar problem with Sky emails not reaching Hotmail/Outlook accounts? If so, how did you resolve it? I'm looking for any technical advice or common solutions for this type of email delivery problem.

Thanks in advance for your help!

What do you mean "Hotmail is now part of the Outlook ecosystem"? That was rebranded back in 2013 to Outlook.com, and Hotmail has always (aside from a brief period when it was independent after been first launched) been owned by Microsoft. Nothing changed apart from the rebrand.

There's no such concept as "how email servers configured to send to Microsoft domains", because it doesn't work like that. "Confirmed that my Outlook/Hotmail account is correctly set up and functioning for all other incoming mail" means nothing.

This sort of problem where you're getting nothing from somebody is usually caused by the wrong email address being sent to, and if its not that its usually something on your end that you've set up- ie the mailbox is full, you've set a rule up, the junk has caught it, you've set auto forward or you've done something else.

Because Outlook/Hotmail is (or was) so prolific and you can usually type any old stuff before the at hotmail/MSN/Outlook it will usually reach somebody so there may be a process of greylisting / delay to curb the tide as it were to catch most of this. You won't know if that's the case, but email is not instant and can be delayed by several hours.

The easiest solution here is to maybe set up a new address at Gmail or wherever and give Sky that address for future correspondence. If you still get nothing then the problem can't be with Outlook.

I have also had this problem with Hotmail (on several.occasions) just not delivering certain emails

The problem is unless you are expecting the email you don't know that it hasn't been delivered to you

My email with Fasthosts has occasionally had issues sending to addresses at certain providers, the last occasion was yahoo adresses but it has been hotmail/outlook previously. While it was resolved after a few days the emails I sent were bounced back as undeliverable (after quite a long delay) so I sent them from an alternative email address until the issue went away. As @Neil_Jones suggests providing an alernative to Sky may be the easiest option for you.

It's probably a Sky issue. There are mechanisms within the email system that provide markers for validation and some receiving email servers will refuse to accept emails where they are not present

SPF and DKIM are the features I'm talking about (feel free to search about them, but it will be tech heavy). Essentially if Sky aren't implementing them then other email servers could just outright reject their emails.

    Try using this site https://www.mail-tester.com/

It will give you an email address to send an email to, then it will report back on its 'spammy-ness' (the more spammy an email is, the fewer of the features such as SPF and DKIM the email provider is implementing.

Me too - sent emails from my 1&1 and gmail accounts, that just didn't arrive, despite me having the correct address

Wish I'd know about this test website when I worked in a call centre, if there was an issue with customers claiming that they'd not received any emails then it would always (100% always) be to a Hotmail or Outlook email account.

UPDATE: I've done further testing and discovered a very specific glitch. I am able to receive Sky emails to my @outlook.com address, but the exact same emails are being blocked when sent to my @hotmail.co.uk address.

This confirms the issue is with Microsoft’s legacy .co.uk server clusters rejecting the Sky "handshake," while their modern .com servers accept it. If you are trying to reach me from a Sky account, please use my [Your Outlook Address] instead until Microsoft resolves this regional routing block.
