Possible Price Problem on New Car (advice needed)

Options
I negotiated a nice discount off a new Mazda 5 mid December for the 2008 face lifted model which comes in January. The dealer quoted the standard list prices and we negotiated from these. I've just found out that Mazda have a deal basically taking a further £850 off on this model if registered between 1st of Jan and march 31st. I get my car in mid Jan, so I'm in that window. I guess this deal is aimed at pushing the new face lifted version. My dealer says he didn't know about this discount, but I believe I'm entitled to it regardless, even if Mazda didn't start it until Jan 1st. He is going to investigate things on Monday, but any thoughts or advice for me would be welcomed. I've paid a small deposit for the vehicle and it's expected at the dealer any day now.

Have you not got a contract pre-dating this special offer?

Hopefully dealer will help and sort something out but i suspect he could say tough.

I would play this softly, softly and see how you get on in the early stages.

You could approach Mazda direct and see if they will offer you a cashback.

You could withdraw from contract and rebuy if deposit isn't too big.

Hoefully though the dealer will be looking for your custom in thre future and will do something.

Can't see anything about it on Mazda.co.uk.

You need to read the 'smallprint' of the deal. Is it for ORDERS placed, or cars REGISTERED between the dates?

Also is it subject to a finance deal - Mrs V was offered an over ride discount, if she bought her Mx% on finance. A lot of messing about to benefit, so bought on credit card (cashback was worth it)

But if it's a Mazda scheme, totally, it shouldn't directly affect the dealers margin.

Think they'll be on your side, if they really weren't aware - why would they want to upset a customer BEFORE they've got you!!?

The reduction is on the "Luxury Pack" which is normally £1750, but currently has 50% off. I negotiated on the full price. The text on the site (link below) says "Retail sales only on vehicles registered between January 1 and March 31 2008" Mine won't be registered until mid Jan.

    Pretty clear, then!

I'd copy the page from the website, just in case.

BUT, on your invoice, did they show the option pac at FULL price (& discount the vehicle), or do a 'deal' on the trade in value, or some other way?

You'll really need the amoumt to show option pac at this recommended price, for it all to fall in your favour!

When Mrs V bought her Mx5, the options we negotiated were shown FULL price & the actual car cost was reduced. This kept the accountants & parts department stock controlers happy & the sales team got their bonus, from Mazda, for a unit sale.

If yours is same way, then I'd see no reason not to get the deal.

& just to be nosey, what did you swap in - a Premacy???

The invoice just shows the total discounted price for the car and options, no mention of the original or full prices on the car or options. Even if I have to speak to Mazda UK myself, I will push for this extra. My worry is the dealer might want to pocket this to cover the chunk of discount I got off the vehicle and options in the first place. The deposit was only £200, so I can play a bit of hardball if needed. I really hope it doesn't come to that. I want to start off on the right track with the dealer and Mazda.

We didn't trade anything in. A couple of new arrivals meant the 5 was the perfect option for us. The sliding doors (electric with luxury pack) are ideal for the wife as well.

    Thanks for the advice.

Not sure why you want to start off on the right track with the dealer? Consider it a business transaction. Dealers are not your friends. I buy cars for my extended family and for our company - probably at least 10 private cars per year. In my experience the salesman is rarely still there in 3 years time - they'll have moved on to another dealership. Once you've got a deal the service department won't know whether you've been hard on the poor sales department.

You haven't had a 'proper' invoice, from what you say. I'm required to provide it this way, for my customers.

It needs to breakdown the seperate items, for their accounting purposes, as well as your own information.

There are items which attract VAT & those which don't, road tax & first registration fee & so on. These shouldn't be one figure, without these itemised first first.

You're entitled to this as a matter of course.

  • You do need to be careful here before hammering into the dealer...there IS a £1000 total available bonus (inc vat) which dealers can use against OUTGOING pre-facelift Mazda 5 registrations in quarter 1 (Jan-Mar) but it is not redeemable against the facelift version.

As recently as Monday, Mazda's own website was showing the facelift brochure but still displaying the outgoing model prices, ...not the new facelift prices.

On the new facelift Mazda 5 there are finance contribution incentives of £1k..if you are taking Mazda's own finance (which is 10.9% apr I believe) or you can get their 6.9% APR if you forego the deposit contribution...but no bonus is applicable if you are not using their finance plans.
