QDR Solicitors and ‘unpaid fuel’

I received a letter from these charlatans mid February for £25 unpaid fuel in south London, and thought my plates had been cloned as I definitely was nowhere that area on that day. I got a Met police CAD number and phoned them back to say it wasn’t me. They were contacting the client and putting the case on hold.

I got a further letter over the weekend to say they were still chasing me. I’ve just phoned them to remind them I gave them a cloned plates reference number and stop writing to me unless it’s with photographic evidence or dropping the claim.

I have googled them and it appears they aren’t what they seem. I don’t think my plates were cloned as it was only £25 of fuel and it’s only been that one incident, I just panicked as there was also an incident of misread plates for a toll charge (easily fixed when they checked the photos).

What do I do now to stop them getting in touch with me? I’ve not given them any more personal details other than what they have already.

Cloned plates are not always cloned plates, if they are using ANPR then these systems are known to use "enhancements" to read the image and translate it to usable text.

An M can be seen as a W, a screw or dirt mark in the wrong place can change B or an R or a C or a D and son on or the other way round - even if it looks cleat, with infra red enhanced cameras coupled with digital enhancements to make it "clearer" for the computer to read can add in more errors.

If you suspect cloned plates or ANPR read error then there are a few checks:

1: is there a picture showing the whole vehicle? is the picture in colour?

if tis a completely different car to your own make, model, colour etc then there should have been a human check for this, you can check for free at the DVLa site here https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/

If this basic check has not been carried out and they are relying 100% on "automated" systenms you may have a claim against the petrol station/whoever allowed the ANPR system to operate on the land under UK GDPR - failure to check for accuracy of data.

2: The make model and colour are the same, you will need to contact he police and possibly the DV LA to report this, make sure that you add something to your vehicle such as a sticker near the number plate

3: check your log book and licence both have the correct address for you, be on the lookout for any post that may include a speeding ticket, a fine, or any other stuff such as a private parking charge notice

As for what you have, if you can contact the petrol station and tell them it wasnt your vehicle as it was located at X, if this is difficult contact the enfarcement company and tell them to put up or shut up state you deny any debt is owed as the vehicle was located at X at the time and they now must either issue a claim on the county court small claims track or cease contacting you on this matter if you want you could state that any furhte communication other than a court claim will incur a processing charge of £20

British oil syndicate… all for £25 worth of fuel. I’ve asked them to send me photographic evidence next time they contact me otherwise I don’t want to hear from them until they are sending the evidence or dropping the case as it wasn’t me or my car.

I’ve had my car for 8 years and all details correct. It’s been 2 months since the first letter, I was fully expecting more fines from elsewhere to come through but haven’t had anything so I’m not sure my plates were cloned after all, more likely a misread.

No, no photo. I've asked them for a photo now as evidence so I'm waiting for them to send that - if it exists.
