Admin fee when cancelling an insurance auto renew within 10 days

Hi All,

Could someone confirm here if the following is permitted?

PolicyExperts have charged me a £15 admin fee to cancel an auto renewal home insurance.

I missed the notifications for the renewal and the payments. The payment was taken 27th March, Auto renew of policy started on the 1st April. However I knew the policy was due and purchased cheaper elsewhere. I saw there was a policy renewal invite on their portal and looked for a cancel renewal option, which I couldn't find. I then took renewal invite to mean just that, not an actual renewal.

I spotted the unwanted renewal payment on Sunday and contacted them yesterday to cancel. I then assumed as it was within 14 days (of both payment and policy start) this would be a full refund. However, they have charged me £15. Is this allowed?

Thanks in advance.

Your policy would have enumerated all the fees you'd be subject to, this should be mentioned there. Not unusual to have an admin fee.

Yes, it's allowed. I believe that under the current legislation they could have charged an amount for the few days of cover, as well as the admin fee.

As you were insured by two companies at the same time due to you missing the auto renewal then you are quite lucky to get away with just the admin fee, which they quite rightly have charged.

There is not normally a cooling off period on renewals.

And in any event, a cooling off period doesn't need to be free of charge.

You could consider the cooling off period to be then time between them sending the pending renewal notice and the renewal taking place.
