Equifax problem using the Reclaim PPI tool on this site

I was transferred to Equifax from the reclaim tool on here so opened an account and completed all the questions to raise the claim. However, they asked for my bank details and when they sent a code to my phone to confirm the details, the message from HSBC was:-

WARNING if somebody has asked for this code they are a criminal. Code ****** confirms a purchase on you card of 0.0GBP to GCS myEquifax.

Has this happened to anyone else as even the message sent looks dodgy to me?!

No that is the std bank message.

YOU NEVER pass the code to anyone than the company you are applying or purchasing from. Fraudsters will use your card details for a purchase & then ring you asking for the code to confirm the purchase.

Equifax are simply checking that you are who you say you are. When you conform the code on their site.

I've had that from other places when they are confirming a new credit card, it's verification

Note that Equifax have no guarantee of holding old records (seems they may be holding old data outside of GDPR on some spurious grounds)

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
