Bear in mind that this is rather more than a dose of the runs. People died according to the news reports.

    Isn't Google great when it's needed ?

Major holiday firms including TUI, Thomas Cook, and Jet2 have successfully taken legal action against couples for making fraudulent or "fundamentally dishonest" sickness claims. In several landmark cases, these companies have moved beyond simply defending claims to actively suing or prosecuting customers for costs and fraud. Key Cases and Consequences

    • Jail Sentences for Fraud: In a major 2017 case, a British couple, Deborah Briton and Paul Roberts, were jailed for nine and 15 months respectively. They attempted to claim £20,000 from Thomas Cook for alleged food poisoning in Majorca, but were caught after social media posts showed them enjoying their holiday with "sun, laughter and fun".
    • Record Fines and Legal Costs:
      • Chelsea Devine and Jamie Melling were ordered to pay TUI £15,000 in costs after a judge ruled their claims were "fundamentally dishonest". Their social media photos directly contradicted their claims of being ill for weeks.
      • Julie Lavelle and Michael McIntyre were ordered to pay over £3,700 to Thomas Cook after their £10,000 claim was dismissed as "wholly implausible".
    • Landmark "Contempt of Court" Ruling: Jet2holidays won a significant Court of Appeal case allowing them to pursue contempt of court proceedings against Karl and Laura Hughes. The couple withdrew their claim after being shown GoPro footage of them snorkelling during the time they claimed to be ill, but the court ruled they could still face prosecution for the initial dishonest submission.
    • Counter-Suits by Hotels: A Greek hotel chain counter-sued a British couple for £170,000 for damage to its reputation after they claimed the resort's food made them ill. The hotel used a "dossier" of Facebook posts to prove the couple had actually enjoyed their stay.

I assume that's not "THE" Michael McIntyre !!!

Perhaps worth distinguishing between Google's core product, i.e. the search engine, and its AI offering, which, rather than directing users to third party content, attempts to identify and precis it, and is therefore interpreting rather than signposting, not always reliably!

    From forum rules:

'Fake news' has a significant impact in society, and it is wise to verify something before blindly stating it as true, or sharing it on a public Forum. Be wise. If we feel something does cross the line and/or is harmful or detrimental to our users, we reserve the right to remove it.

This includes posts we believe have been generated by AI. Artificial intelligence can be a useful tool – MSE has its own AI features – but the Forum is a place for real people to share their experiences and insights, not for AI-generated answers.

As I added to my post - I'm aware that people have died during this awful time.

And that it's not an effort by unscrupulous, dishonest people to scam travel companies.

I spent the day in the company of a healthy person.

Next day she developed gastro enteritis.

Next again day admitted to hospital and died the day after.

Perfectly healthy on Sunday, died on Wednesday.

    Gastro enteritis can kill.

    We
estimate that there are 180 deaths per year in the UK (95% CrI 113 to 359) caused by foodborne disease based on these 11 pathogens. While this is a small fraction of the estimated 2.4 million cases of foodborne illness per year it still illustrates the potential severity of these illnesses demonstrating the importance in continuing efforts to reduce these infections.

@sheramber My sister-in-law was taken ill in Cyprus, only one of her group so not suggesting poor hygiene at the hotel. Ill in bed (more accurately the bathroom) for the first day, but immediately transferred to hospital when concerns raised with the hotel about her. In hospital on a drip for 3 days but recovered. As you say, these infections develop very fast.
