Best time to realise 2026/2027 CGT gains?

The world didn't stand still while we held a 4 day bank holiday weekend in here the UK 😉
You can either use the reporting service or file a tax return.
If people are earning more than £1k trading goods for a living, then they should be filling out a tax return themselves. I know plenty that do.
I'm all for tax evaders being caught and punished. It doesn't excuse anyone else evading a lesser amount of tax.

Everyone's expected to play by the rules; do you have any losses you can realise to offset this gain?

I actually agree on the tax evaders point I just find it remarkable that people will be coining it in v the hoops I've just jumped through on the absolutely horrific HMRC reporting website over £20.
The joys of doing the right thing 😀

Interesting. Maybe the tax return route is actually easier (and also delays payment).

Might be.
Put it this way the first question "Do you have a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number?".
Now most people apparently will not but the HMRC website offers next to no help on what one of those is or how I'd know or where I'd find it.
The tax owed isn't an issue.
The issue for me is the whole site seems to be written on the assumption you're a tax expert v some poor sod who's sold a few shares and is simply trying to do the honest thing 😌

Odd. It makes me log in using my Government Gateway details and then gets straight on to asking me about the asset I want to report.
A UTR is issued when you are enrolled in Self Assessment. It is shown in your personal tax account.

Yeah I used my Government Gateway ID to login.
Then it asked me my address. Stuff you'd think they would know already. And whether the "shares" are listed on the stock exchange.
Oh and how much tax I think I owe which felt a little odd as I assumed they'd work that out for me but no they want to know how much I think I owe and then they ask me to upload a JPG or PDF to show my workings.
This is the British tax system in 2026 😂
Maybe it's different if you're registered for SA but honestly it's as if the whole thing has been made as awful as possible for something that you'd think is going to be more and more common as allowances reduce.
I get that tax can be a minefield but I really don't think I could design a website that bad if I tried.
