This April, West Horsley Place invites visitors to step into the elegance and intrigue of the early nineteenth century with Regency Revels, a vibrant living history festival taking place across the historic house and grounds.

Running from 18th to 19th April, the weekend offers an immersive journey into the Regency era, bringing history to life through a rich programme of talks, demonstrations, hands-on activities, and performances for all ages.

With over 600 years of history, West Horsley Place provides an atmospheric setting for the festival. Located in the heart of Surrey and closely connected to the world of Jane Austen, the estate provides a unique opportunity to explore the people, places, and stories that shaped the period.

Visitors can enjoy free-flow access to the manor house and walled gardens, where knowledgeable volunteers will share insights into the site’s Regency past. Throughout the weekend, expert-led experiences will allow guests to delve deeper into the culture and daily life of the time.

Highlights include a talk from Lucy Quinnell on How to be Related, exploring Austen’s connections to Surrey and the local area, revealing fascinating links between real people and her celebrated works.

Sample authentic Regency recipes prepared on site in The Stone Kitchen by Jane’s Historical Kitchen.

The festival also features Regency dance displays and workshops led by Mrs Bennet’s Ballroom, offering visitors the chance to learn the steps and etiquette of the period.

Adding to the immersive atmosphere, costumed interpreters from Regal Rose Historical Portrayal will bring Regency fashion and society to life, while a special display of original books from the era will showcase works by some of the period’s most influential authors.

Outside, visitors can enjoy carriage rides through the estate, courtesy of Daniel Brown Horseman – whose work has featured in productions including Bridgerton – or experience the sights and sounds of military life with a living history battalion recreating the world of the early nineteenth-century British Army.

Families are well catered for, with a range of creative activities for younger visitors, including fan-making, code-breaking, and model shipbuilding – hands-on experiences designed to bring history to life in a fun and engaging way.

Ilona Harris, Director of West Horsley Place said: “Regency Revels is all about making history accessible, engaging, and enjoyable for everyone. Whether you’re interested in literature, landscape, fashion, or daily life, there’s something here to spark curiosity. We’re excited to welcome visitors of all ages to experience the sights, sounds, and stories of the Regency period in such a special setting.”

Blending education with entertainment, Regency Revels offers a unique opportunity to explore the Regency era in one of Surrey’s most historic and atmospheric locations.
