Sneaky British Gas

I'm on a fixed tariff with British Gas via MSE Energy Club. From today the unit rates for gas and electric have been reduced as promised. However after checking the new prices on the BG app I find that sneaky British Gas have increased the standing charge for gas and electric. I thought standing charges were staying as they were.

Gas standing charge has increased from 28.304 pence per day to 29.72 pence per day

Electric standing charge has increased from 54.699 pence per day to 57.43 pence per day

You thought wrong. The standing charge is outside their control. Some regions have gone up, some haven't.

That would be very wrong, if they had, because you're on a fixed tariff until it expires. The rates should remain unchanged throughout the fixed term, but the government prevailed on suppliers to reduce all unit rates when some of the 'policy costs' were removed by the budget.

You're seeing a 'sneaky increase' simply because the bigger figure includes 5% VAT while the smaller one doesn't.

And just to confirm the above…

    28.304*1.05 = 29.7192

    54.699*1.05 = 57.433

Standing charges on a fix shouldn't be being increased mid-contract. The posts immediately below yours have explained what has happened here!

  • British Gas is listed by MSE as passing on the reduction to everyone including those on fixes. I am a gas only customer on the collective Feb 27 tariff via MSE. They emailed me on 21 March and advised me my prices would be reduced and to check my account from 1st April. I found nothing yesterday and heard nothing more but today a note on their website says reduction does not apply to fixes. I have rung them and queried why they are not passing on the reduction and why they have told MSE they are passing on the reduction to all including fixes. First person was obnoxious and unhelpful, didn't listen. Rang again and being rung back with an explanation promised. What do MSE make of this?

I am on BG Collective Nov 26 fixed.

On 1st April my G and E tariffs dropped.

Gas down from 5.019p to 4.714p about 6%

Electric down from 20.98p to 17.638p about 16%

    Standing charges, no change.

    Prices ex vat.
