Anti worm/tick and repeat prescriptions
I have a new dog which I "rescued" from someone whose circumstances have changed.
I have just been told that he has always been on nexgard for tick/flea/worm treatment. It is not a problem to carry on like this. The problem could be the vet. I know that my vet (I had another dog that died just before Christmas:( ) doesn't like to hand out prescriptions, even though I know they must, and I am afraid they are going to charge me goodness knows how much for routine visits for what is just an anti worm and tick treatment.
Before I ask I would like to be prepared.
And what if instead I bought something off the counter? I never even knew you needed a prescription for an anti tick/worm...

It depends on the ingredients in them whether they are prescription only.
You can buy some in pet shops, some chemists sell them, on the internet.
There are also ‘ natural’ products that claim to work.
I do not routinely treat my dogs for fleas. In 0ver 30 years of dog ownership my dogs have had fleas twice- both times caught in someone else’s house.
I only treat if necessary.
I used a scalibor collar for ticks when I lived. in ‘tick central’ in the north of Scotland.
Now that I no longer do I do not routinely use tick treatments.I have no desire to pump my dogs full of insecticides unnecessarily.
Your situation may be different.
