Old TRV - how do I remove the end to access the pin?

Hello, my parents have this old TRV which has jammed shut. I’ve googled how to try to free the pin but can’t get at it. The metal ring keeping the TRV on doesn’t unscrew, plastic barrel doesn’t come off, the metal end piece turns but doesn’t come off. Any ideas?

Pull metal knurled ring towards the grey head to allow the whole head to unclip from the TRV. Use both hands, fingers around the metal to pull it over the 'cam' on the 'fingers' of it towards the head knob.

Pretty sure I had that or a very similar design in one home some 20-odd years ago.

  • Thank you! This TRV is probably 30 years old.

If you cannot get the head seperated from the valve body, you could open head till it is at maximum, then put heating on with the boiler flow temperture at high. Then get a hairdryer and point it a valve body. Sometimes the extra bit of heat can free up the stuck pin.

From what others have said it looks like that chromed metal ring won't unscrew, if so try levering it towards the right using a flat ended screwdriver - insert it between ring and valve body and twist to exert pressure on the ring which might just break the bond between the ring and the plastic it sits on.

Not sure if this will help you but it looks like you have a Temset valve.
