I've a glowplug to prepare for removal, I expect it to be carboned up. What product to assist with

Loos all. Loos All Spray - Permatex https://share.google/kGTu0DRPxMRMILttN

Or Plusgas

Kroil and lost of patience, if it doesn't shift spray it again. It's not cheap, but will be cheap if you break the glow plug!

A lot of people swear by a 50:50 mix of acetone and auto trans fluid. I suspect that the key ingredient is the acetone, and any light oil mixed in would probably be just as effective. But that's just a guess - I've always used Plus Gas!

I would be put off by the description, it says it dissolves rust; what nonsense.

It contains Methyl salicylate which is a rust remover. (Oil of Wintergreen).

Probably CocaCola would be equally effective though!

Diesel oil is a very good penetrating oil, but I use GT-85 or Plusgas. WD40 is no use as it is a water displacer (useful if you have an Atlas missile in your garden silo) not a penetrating oil. (WD40 is great for removing sticker residue btw)

A glowplug is not likely to be stuck by external corrosion that will be easily reached by any penetrating oil. It'll be stuck by a build-up of gunk and soot on the protruding tip INSIDE the combustion chamber.

So get the engine good and hot, and give it a good Italian tune-up, THEN try.

Would it need to be some form of acid actually to remove rust? Where would the rust go?

You would need to ask a Chemist. Best I can find is that it forms complex ions (that must be soluble in the oils). It is used in penetrating oils to free rusted items, but has it's main use in liniments and Listerine mouthwash according to Wikipedia.

Like I said, the phosphoric acid in CocaCola would probably work just as well, or white vinegar, kettle descaler etc.….

I have unseized an engine by draining the crusty sludge oil left in it and filling to the top with diesel. Ruins all the seals
    but they needed replacing anyway.

Get the engine hot then spray and clean around the plugs, spray again and leave overnight. Repeat for a couple of days.

When you start to remove them undo 1/4 turn or until resistance is felt then leave it for a minute or 2, spray it then tighten
it up again to work the oil down the threads. Repeat, but stop as soon as resistance is felt and allow it to cool and spray.

Repeat… You maybe surprised how hot they get even undoing them slowly by hand and with each degree of temperature
increase they are expanding very very slightly but enough to start binding which risks snapping them.

I am always sceptical about marketing, I prefer to use oil or heat, but WD40 and such certainly seem to have most people convinced it works. I do sometimes use penetrating oil, because it comes in a handy spray.

WD-40 is widely considered one of the best marketing stories and branding successes of all time; it very much has/had a cult following.
