I’ve done a Norwegian cruise and three of the destinations are the same as your cruise. Haugasund - it’s a nice little town to walk around but there isn’t that much there. Flam is stunning - we booked the train ourselves up to Myrdal and then mountain biked back down and the scenery was amazing. The other alternative is to zip line part way down and then mountain bike. I’m not sure how big your family group is as if you’ve got a 3 year old it will limit your activities but if you’re in a big group some might be able to do more activities. The scenery cruising to Olden through the fjords is spectacular. Olden is also stunning. The skylift trip is popular but can be impeded by cloud. A trip to the glaciar is also popular. You can get a local bus there which some from the cruise ship were doing. We did a hike on our own which was a very steep climb for a couple of miles but the view at the top was absolutely stunning. There were only six other people at the top so it wasn’t a popular option with other cruisers but it was one of the main highlights of the holiday. It would be too much for a 3 year old but if you’re in a large group and some like hiking I would highly recommend it. Generally it’s cheaper to organise trips or activities yourself but you need to feel confident and willing to take the risk of getting back to the boat yourself. There are local companies at each destination who will offer you the same trip as the cruise ship but at a cheaper price and will guarantee they will get you back to the cruise ship on time. We thought the trips with the cruise ship were expensive but they did seem very popular and it’s straightforward as the cruise ship sort everything out so all people have to do is turn up at the meeting point at the allotted time.
