Smart Meter Monitor Replacement

'…So that begs the question that if I were to purchase a new monitor for example, how would I know if this is compatible with their meters?…'
The easiest, quickest and cheapest (free) way is to check using one of the smartphone apps available.
Many utility companies do their own. Your parents' supplier might do. Alternately there are universal apps which are very good.
For example I use the Loop Energy app which connects fine to my ancient SMETS 1 meter. It is actually much more useful than my arthritic IHD. Your parents might well find that an app does all they need and they don't need a new device after all.

That appears to be identical to what they have!

Mum and Dad's version difference says R£ instead of SM1

It's a few years ago now, but ISTR that DCC simply gave up trying to 'enrol and adopt' this meter/hub combination on to the smart meter network. It must be getting on for 10 years since they were last installed, so BG should simply carry out a meter exchange to SMETS2.

Agreed.
OP have you / your parents asked BG whether they can replace your meters with current-model ones?
In the photo of the meter I shared, to the left of the meter below the display it says 2017. That's the year of manufacture. What's the year on your parents' meter?

If you're looking at the Ivie Bud their website has a tool that will tell you if it's compatible with your meter.

Which 3rd party IHD is better value, the Ivie Bud (£53.98 inc delivery) or the Glow Display and CAD (£69.99)? I think I'd be inclined to go with the Glow as I like to mess around with APIs and scripts.

Anybody interested in the Ivie Bud can get one for £35 delivered,if you're quick as the offer finishes at midnight.

TBH I'd be a bit wary about spending £50-£70 on an in-home device for a meter that's nigh on ten years old. Just think how annoyed you'd be if if you'd got one and the BG decided to change the meter
AFAIK if you want the Glow device you have to get the appropriate unit depending on whether you have a SMETS 1 or SMETS 2 meter as they aren't compatible.
