Charging optimisation not working on phone

I've got an Google Pixel 9a and in the settings I set it to only charge up to 80% as apparently this extends the battery life.

I went into settings>battery>battery health>charging optimisation and I've selected charge to 80% and toggled on charging optimisation but for some reason it's still charging to 100%. Can anyone help me as I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Thanks

I have a pixel 10 and the charging is generally limited to 80% but every once in a while it will charge to 100%. I believe I've read this is good practice.

Is it always charging to 100% for you?

Do you have Adaptive Charging turned on?

If you do then it charges to 80% then holds but does go on to charge to 100% at the time it believes you will need it by… normally its done to align to your overnight charging and when you typically unplug it in the morning.

I believe if you turn off the adaptive charging it will simply stop at 80%

Yes it's always charging to 100%.

There are 2 options - adaptive charging, which means it's always charges to 100%

The other option is Limit to 80%, which is what I've selected.

On my 8a I have charging optimisation set to limit battery to 80% charge. Separately I have adaptive battery off. Most of the time it will charge to 80%, although I did have a period a few weeks ago when it charged to 100% every day for about a week straight. Might be something weird like that going on for you? Has it ever charged to 80% or have you only just enabled the setting?

Hi waterman10 You may not be allowing the battery to complete calibration. When you set the charge limit to 80% but it charges to 100%, you may have to leave it charging for up to an hour until it fully calibrates. A shield appears next to the battery level indicator to let you know job done. After that, it should charge only to 80%, except for occasional recalibration.

If that fails, go into Settings > Apps > All Apps > Device Health Services > Storage & Cache. Delete User Data & Cache. Restart phone, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health > Charging Optimisation > Limit to 80%. Charge battery until such time as the shield appears next to battery level indicator. That again may be 100% plus an hour or so. After that, it should only charge to 80%.

Might be worth also making sure you have done a discharge below 15 percent or so then back to 100% too. Not every time but it may need a full cycle to calibrate itself before being happy to stop at 80%

    This isn't right.

Calibration happens automatically requires the battery to charge to 100% and wait for the shield to appear on the battery icon.

If you tried to do what you suggested, it would stop at 80 unless it was in the middle of a calibration anyway.

True, I use the Accu battery app and it says to discharge below 14% and then re charge fully for an accurate health measurement. What I was suggesting the OP do is turn off the battery management, allow the battery to get down low and then do a full recharge without interruption then try re enabling the battery care function and see if anything is different.

Sorry missed the bit about disabling first 😁
