Banking account without debit card

Hi

To help (force!) Me to budget, I'm thinking about paying my salary into a bank account and using that account to just pay direct debits and standing orders. Then transferring a set amount weekly to a separate account which has a debit card attached, to use for day to day spending.

Does anyone know of a current account which has no debit card attached, or which has very basic functions for checking balances etc?

In principle you could ask for one not to be sent or destroy the card on receipt. Most online applications are just going to generate one automatically because 99% or more of people want one so they dont bother asking.

Revolut does not come with a debit card as standard, although I believe nothing stopping you adding to Apple or Google Pay. Of course you could just chop the card up on arrival if you open one elsewhere.

Have you looked at Monzo or Starling? You can separate money into different pots/spaces and set direct debits to come out of those pots/spaces. I find it very useful for budgeting.

Chase is another option, I believe you can set up several accounts and only have your debit card attached to one.

If you want to remove the temptation of spending then I don't know of any banks that don't provide them as its a basic feature of current accounts. As suggested you could always destroy the card. Also with Monzo I think you have to pay if you want a replacement debit card within a certain period which might reduce the temptation to order one.

With most current accounts you can disable the card in their app in seconds. Although it is as easy to re-enable it.

After a long period of not using my debit card, Bank of Scotland stopped sending me a replacement card.

Thus they might be amenable to not sending you one if you request that when opening an account.

  • Same applies with Lloyds Bank and Halifax (which along with BOS are all part of LBG).
