Too many red flags. It is easy for a solvent trader to set up a merchant acquirers account. You see market traders and car boot sellers taking card payments these days. They are in effect asking you to pay cash, paying by DD affords you no consumer protection.

Sorry for the delay - just saw this.
All these were credit card payments. The last time I used my bank card at all was in July 2025, and that was in a cash machine. I can't remember when I last used it as a debit card.
At least the drain guy even accepted the American Express that I prefer to use for the cashback. It seems that some of the payment providers that market themselves to smaller businesses (SumUp, Square, Zettle) accept Amex as standard.
