Don't doubt it, but do you then feel obliged (or have no option other than) to book the property through booking.com rather than direct?
Exclusive access? Cheaper? More payment options? Clearly not more secure.
In Ye Olden Days when you were deciding on your holiday you went to the travel agents and picked up the brochures.
Now you browse booking.com.
Difference is that back then the idea of contacting a hotel on the Algarve to see if they'd do it cheaper than Thomas Cook wouldn't have been a practical consideration.
Now it takes 10 seconds to turn up details of any hotel anywhere (and usually their online quote/booking page).
