Iceland bag rip-off

When the government brought in the charge for carrier bags Iceland started adding a charge of £1.60 to cover this cost on their home deliveries. I have just received this months shop and it was delivered loose in the crates and I had to use the bags I had from last month to carry the shopping from my front door to the kitchen. This caused me a major issue as I have arthritis and cannot bend without causing pain in my back. The driver kindly tried to help by lifting one of the crates to waist level but this left me with severe back pain that affected me for the rest of the day. To add insult to injury they still charged me the £1.60 fee which has now been renamed on the bill from “bags, pick and packing” last month to “picking and packing” this month. It was stated on the bill that who’s would be a bagless delivery as a trial period for environmental reasons which I would understand if they cancelled the extra fee but this would not take into account people with disabilities who rely on home delivery. I have emailed the company informing them after many years I will no longer be shopping with them.

I would also like to add that anyone who gets multiple plastic bags each month please donate them to your local food bank because they are always needed so they have something for people to take their shopping home in and they are always very grateful for them.

Ocado deliver in bags, and refund 10p for each one returned with next shop. They are the thin "disposable" kind which I find useful in my handbag pocket as less bulky than bag for life. HTH

This is what the website sates:

We deliver for FREE, no delivery pass required Simply spend £40 online to receive free next day delivery.

So delivery isn't free when they add a charge of £1.70 and the shopping is delivered in a crate no bags supplied anymore. The bill states the charge is for picking and packing but the items aren't packed. I don't mind paying a delivery charge but this statement is misleading.

I don't shop anywhere that doesn't deliver in bags. Might be good for the environment but when you have a disability and end up suffering pain etc just from trying to empty crates. Then feeling embarrassed because I'm not moving fast enough to unpack them.

I've not used ocado yet but Morrisons via Amazon deliver in big paper bags. I know they probably cost more but I can't do the unbagged deliveries anymore.

I told the driver I couldn't carry the crate indoors so had to go and find some bags. It's not on when we grocery shop online because of disability, I won't be using Iceland again.

Noticed many social media posts about this too. Ive been with Iceland for many years so know exactly how they kept renaming this fee over the years and its just not on.

Online delivery has been around for a long time now and you either paid for delivery or it was free (in Icelands case when you spend over a certain amount its free), any charges, costs etc… that was involved in your delivery came from this charge.

They added this fee in for bags due to governmental regulations, they later changed it to bags, picking & packaging and added on another £1.10 cost to that, they then increased it further to £1.70 (in my area) and dropped the word “bags”. Delivery still came in bags then and now they decide they want to go bagless… well be fare and reduce the fee, allow the consumer to decide or like others have noted return the fee on return of bags like another suparmarket.

I get bagless deliveries from Iceland, and I am not charged any "bags picking and packing fee" anymore. I used to have the £1.60 fee until it all went bagless.

A £40 order is delivered for £40. That's free. (well actually £2 less if you pay via Bonus Card of course).

Surprised this isn't happening for everyone. It can't just be my area that's free??

I just thought I'd check for the fee. Changed to picking and packing.

Ocado drivers will also carry bags through to your kitchen and are always cheerful.

Thanks @JadedAngel88 , seems really strange my last few orders had no picking and packing fee. Perhaps this is still being rolled out. I will keep an eye on mine to see if it changes.
