Report to ebay as they are avoiding fee's.

My apologies, I missed that you paid in cash - a very unfortunate thing to have done.

Not only does it circumvent eBay fees which is against their policies, it also means they are not obliged to help (as the transaction was not done through them).

Both of these points are very convenient for the seller. At best you could report them for their conduct and fee avoidance:

I might be tempted to mention your intentions beforehand to the seller to try and force a resolution…

Do you have a receipt? If you have purchased from a UK company you have consumer rights (assuming you purchased as a consumer yourself) but you will need to prove you purchased the item from them (you may also need to verify a purchase for trustpilot).

Ebay messages will not confirm that the money changed hands. They can just say you never showed up or changed your mind.
