Unauthorised direct debit query

Rather than any of the above, I think that the bank has mistakenly used its right of set-off - it has taken money out of one account to set off a debt owed by the customer on another account.
I think that the direct debit explanation is a red herring.

I don’t think we have enough information for reaching a conclusion on the rights or wrongs of the bank’s action.

I didn't comment on the "rights and wrongs" of what the bank did or reach any "conclusion" on that.
The bank put the money back, so that would indicate the bank made a mistake; or possibly that they initially decided to take the money and then changed their mind and returned it.

That could also be consistent with the bank setting up a minimum payment DD (without the card holder's active consent) which together with manual payments the account holder made, resulted in more being paid off the credit card that month than the cardholder wished to pay.

But the OP said in the first post that the bank took the "full amount" - presumably meaning, from the context, the full amount owing on the card, which the holder was paying back bit by bit.

Just as a counter point, some BT cards ask if you want to setup a DD or not when you do the transfer (and if so, minimum, a fixed amount or in full), it is perfectly possible to open the card, do a transfer and not authorise any DD to be setup
Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
