My wife has told me that she's already made a deposit of £20 which is what their agent said to do but now he's telling her that she needs to deposit 1,7000 then he reduced the amount to 1k

Definite scam, run (don't walk) away!

This agent does sound just like a scammer. I would contact crypto.com by email, explain what has happened so far (if you have the name of the agent, that would be good), and ask them to explain (a) what the actual process is, in writing, and (b) the behaviour of the apparent agent.

More fundamentally, does/did @Giraffe76 's wife actually have an account with crypto.com or was it's "discovery" part of Oscar's narrative?
If there was/is an account, has access been restored? Or, at least, its existence verified?

I do believe the existence is genuine and can be confirmed but what ethics gradient said was a good point about sending them an email through their own website.
It's the way Oscar seemed so insistent on this is how it's meant to be done and no other way is possible

It's the way Oscar seemed so insistent on this is how it's meant to be done and no other way is possibleWhat? By sending him £1500 (or is it £1000)? Not really that surprising is it?
Regain your wife's access to the account and see if any of this is true.

Which cryptocurrency did she invest in and how do you know it’s now worth £29000? Is this just what the agent told you or have you seen the current balance in a genuine crypto.com account?
You said £250 was invested about 7 years ago. That would be 116 times increase since she purchased. Bitcoin in 2019 averaged around £5800 and is now currently around £51000 so less then 10 times increase. Other popular cryptocurrencies will be in a similar ball park.
So unless she invested in a more obscure currency that is actually 116 times up, the alluring statement “it’s worth £29000!” might all be part of the scam.

(Sorry - misread figures in your post, so my comment was wrong. Still, the historical data is worth knowing - the price was about £2,600 at the start of 2019):

Going by the replies we are now 99.9% certain it's a scam and are walking away. Have blocked Oscar's number and will forget about it
